A Letter “from Jesus” to the Racially Divided Church of America

Perhaps you’re familiar with the letters John the apostle wrote to the seven churches in Asia Minor while he was exiled on the island of Patmos…words he received as direct revelation from Jesus Christ himself (see Revelation 1:19-3:22).
Five of the seven churches received a strong rebuke from Jesus for the sins they allowed and perpetuated in their midst. In each of these churches, Jesus spoke directly to their waywardness and called them to wake up, repent, and return to their divine purpose and calling.
It’s no secret that the church in America has lost her way on many fronts, one of which is in the area of being a healing agent of love, grace, and truth in the face of racial tensions, injustices, and inequities.
As I was preparing to preach a sermon on racial healing, I couldn’t stop thinking about what Jesus would say of America in her current state.
I believe we’d be getting a letter.
The following words are what I believe Jesus might say to the racially divided church in America today. These are my words; I do claim to have a direct revelation from the Lord on these specific words, but as one who prays earnestly for our nation and, more so, the Church, I believe these words serve as a call to repent and return to the purpose God has for His Church.
Oh that we would be a bride without spot, wrinkle, or blemish (see Ephesians 5:22)!
The Letter
Write this letter to the angel of the church in America. This is the message from the One in whose name you pray but halfway obey. The One who prayed and died for you to make you one, holy, and new.
I know all the things you do. You are highly regarded for being the greatest nation on Earth; it’s true. I see your beautiful church buildings, nearly one on every corner. Your music and programs, more modern than the former. You invite me into the building as if I’m a guest; but don’t you remember your heart is where my Spirit rests? I see you’ve progressed economically and academically; and now with AI, you’ve replaced my voice technologically.
Yes, America, I have this against you. You have a pill that will heal every ill. Yet you ignore the gaping racial wounds and claim it’s my will. “Just preach the Gospel,” you say, while misunderstanding the Gospel is the Way…to unity and healing and peace that supersedes feelings. Can’t you see— it’s always been my plan that you model the grace that can heal the division in your land.
Oh, I see your multicolored communities, schools, and workplaces, yet most of your churches remain segregated. I see your niceties and good intentions, like that’s all I’ve wanted from you. But if you read my Word, you’ll see that you do not love each other as I commanded you to.
My dear American church, you have complicated my simple charge to you, which was to be an earthly display of my covenant anew; to showcase my wisdom in its rich variety to your racially torn society. Simply, I called you to renounce the pride and prejudices that linger in your hearts, and tear down the racial barriers that keep you apart.
You have downplayed the imago dei, that is the image of God in exchange for a god of your way. Now turn back to me and what I’ve called you to do, or I will remove my presence from you. Yes, return to what is right and true, and let my Spirit lead you.
Anyone with ears to hear it must listen and understand what I am saying to My Church by the Spirit.
