Talking to their parents about sex probably ranks at the bottom of the list for most youth. Right? Actually, that’s wrong. Parents, especially those who talk about sexual integrity with their child are highly influential and in a 2012 survey,
almost 9 in 10 teens (87%) said that it would be much easier to postpone sexual activity and avoid pregnancy if they were able to have more open, honest conversations about these topics with their parents.
That’s huge! And pretty darn encouraging.

Last Thursday, I had the privilege of speaking to several hundred middle & high school students about not just sex, but sexual integrity. A good definition for sexual integrity is honoring yourself and others by treating your sexuality with dignity and respect. Heartbeat International defines it as “expressing your gift of sexuality throughout life in a true, excellent, honest and pure way.” So as you can see, sexual integrity is deeper than just “saying no.”

My Story

Every year approximately 750,000 teenage girls get pregnant. In 1999, I was one of them. I never imagined I’d be in a such a confusing and scary situation. I was disappointed with myself and had no idea how I’d get myself back on track toward my goals and dreams.

I had heard “abstinence speeches,” but for some reason, I still found myself pregnant. I wasn’t as invincible as I had thought . . . I was facing the natural consequences of my own choices and it was hard.
Had someone taught me to honor my sexuality in a pure and excellent way, not be afraid of it or ignore it, maybe my story would’ve been different . . . maybe.

Sexual Integrity as a Lifestyle

Truth be told, teenagers and young adults aren’t the only ones who need to hear a “sexual integrity speech.” Like eating healthy and exercising, sexual  integrity is a lifestyle. Whether you’re a teenager, a single young adult, married, divorced or widowed.

I’ve made it my goal to help spread this message with as many youth as I can. I don’t believe it’s a lost cause. Not everyone is having sex!

Young people need to know that there is an army of youth who are passionately committed to maintaining their sexual integrity and operating in healthy relationships. If you’re a youth, will you be one of them? Will you help me spread this message to those who need to hear it?

I’d love to connect with you and see how I might be of service to your youth group, college or school. Connect with me today!
